Purpose: The Middle School Principal is a vital leadership position in the Palmyra-Macedon Central School District. The Middle School Principal is thoroughly familiar with the principles of child, adolescent, and educational psychology; with the content, scope and sequence of the several disciplines taught in the elementary schools, with the instructional materials that are available; and with promising, as well as proven instructional methods. The Superintendent of Schools may, on occasion, call upon the Middle School Principal to give wider scope to their professional competencies, experience and judgment by serving on a curriculum or other committees. The Middle School Principal evaluates the performance of teachers and advises the Superintendent with reference to recommendations for employment and reappointment.

Expected Results:
1. The Middle School Principal will supervise and evaluate members of the Middle School faculty and staff by:
- Reporting to the Superintendent of Schools the needs of the school with respect to personnel.
- Supervising and evaluating professional, support, and classified personnel and programs.
- Being knowledgeable in the current personnel performance rubrics.
- Directing the activities of all members of the staff assigned to the school in the performance of their duties.
- Overseeing the orientation of all new faculty and staff members, ensuring that these new members will be very familiar with school philosophy, texts, guides, personnel policies and school financing.
- Aiding teachers in the interpretation of the courses of study and other instructional supplies and materials.
- Stimulating professional improvement by working with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Student Learning and the Professional Development Committee on a well-planned in-service training program for the faculty.
- Aiding teachers with their daily programs and lesson plans when needed.
- Motivating faculty personnel and encouraging professional development.
- Recognizing efficiency and accomplishments of non-certified personnel.
- Conferring as necessary with any member of the school staff concerning individual problems and, when appropriate, involves all responsible parties in the resolution of personnel problems.
2. The Middle School Principal will foster Middle School-Community interaction and communication by:
- Being personally involved in all activities involving pupil/parent contacts such as dealing with suspensions, expulsions, student progress and adjustment, placement of students, guidance and counseling matters and other pupil/parent relationships that are delicate in nature.
- Promoting good public relations at all times in the school and community by the proper interpretation of the educational program.
- Serving as the Testing Coordinator for all grades in that building.
- Responding to inquiries and concerns from residents and parents regarding school district policies and procedures as they relate to the instructional program.
- Updating and promoting the Middle School website.
- Contributing to the creation of the Middle School newsletter.
- Being available to meet with parents and community members on various subjects.
- Regularly attends public meetings and school-sponsored activities.
3. The Middle School Principal will develop, monitor, and maintain proper standards of student discipline by:
- Promoting the character education curriculum.
- Meeting with students to discuss their behavior and helping them make proper behavioral choices in the future.
- Making sure all students, staff, parents, and faculty members are aware of the Middle School’s expectations for student behavior.
4. The Middle School Principal will oversee the regular functions of the building by:
- Implementing the policies of the Board of Education and the directives of the Superintendent of Schools.
- Reporting to the Superintendent of Schools the needs of the school with respect to equipment and supplies.
- Overseeing, supervising and certifying the preparation, accuracy, and maintenance of a wide variety of records and reports.
- Administering the budget appropriation allocated to the school.
- Being responsible for all monies collected on the operation of the school and the keeping of accurate records of these funds.
- Supervising the maintenance, cleanliness and security of the building and its contents.
- Promoting safety in the school by having a systematic program of fire drills, pedestrian traffic control and periodic inspection of buildings and grounds.
- Establishing and implementing student health and safety procedures.
- Monitoring student attendance.
- Maintaining the pupil records system.
5. The Middle School Principal will promote the social, emotional, and educational growth of the students by:
- Working with the Director of Instructional Support Services to recruit and hire quality faculty and staff.
- Working with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Student Learning to design and implement a staff development program.
- Working with the Director of Special Services to establish and implement programs appropriate to students with special needs.
- Assuring the presence of effective programs and procedures for the general counseling of pupils.
- Exerting leadership in the adaptation of the general program of education approved for the schools to meet the particular needs of the Palmyra-Macedon community served.
- Participating in the yearly determination of textbooks-reviewing, evaluating and recommending preferred and optional texts, and also recommending the discarding of certain texts.
- Directing and supervising the study and selection of all basic and supplementary textbooks for recommendation to the Superintendent.
- Reporting to the Superintendent of Schools the needs of the school with respect to the curriculum.
- Furnishing the necessary supplies and instructional aides to staff for the improvement of instruction.
- Promoting good health practices, and enforcing the rules regarding immunizations and communicable diseases.
- Providing leadership in the improvement of the total educational program within the Middle School by visiting classrooms, conferring with teachers, giving leadership in curriculum improvement and assisting in the selection and use of instructional materials.
- Sharing in the development of curricular programs for the district and assuming the responsibility for the implementation of such programs when approved.
- Consulting regularly with and coordinating the services of District and Building Lead Teachers so that all classroom teachers may receive effective assistance.
- Encouraging the development of student body spirit through rewards, privileges, and recognition.
- Utilizing to the fullest, all resources of the school system and the community in developing the most effective educational program.
- Providing for individual differences and placing each student in an atmosphere which will stimulate learning and progress.
- Being available at all times to consult with parents and teachers concerning the welfare of any student.
- Promoting their professional growth through reading, attending conferences and workshops in order to provide professional leadership of the highest type.
- Coordinating the district’s summer programs.
6. The Middle School Principal will promote extracurricular activities for students by:
- Scheduling student programs and activities.
- Facilitating and supporting student groups in order to assist extracurricular participants and advisors.
7. The Middle School Principal will be a liaison between the Middle School and District Office by:
- Submitting written reports upon request to the Superintendent.
- Participating as an active and contributing member of the Administrative Team, and the Building Improvement Team.
- Chairing, facilitating or serving as a member of district-wide committees when requested.
- Serving as school district representative to regional committees when requested.
- Assisting the superintendent in preparing administrative procedures and drafts of policy.
8. All parents, students, community members, employees, and all visitors to the Palmyra-Macedon CSD will experience the Pal-Mac Way by:
- Greeting parents, students, community members, employees, and all visitors with a friendly and helpful attitude.
- Displaying a customer service approach when working with others in person, on the phone, and through written and electronic communication.
- Being attentive to the needs of all individuals who request their assistance.
- Communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Utilizing their skills to de-escalate a situation when other people are in a heightened or excited state.
9. The Middle School Principal will assume other duties, projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
Evaluation: At a minimum, the Middle School Principal will be evaluated on an annual basis by the Superintendent of Schools.
