Purpose: The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics provides District-wide coordination and development of all programs of physical education, health, and interscholastic athletics including the development of short and long-range plans. The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will display a passion for health, wellness, and athletics, and the student as a whole child. The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will foster positive relationships with students, parents, employees, the community, and the region-at-large.

Expected Results:
- The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will improve educational opportunities for students by:
- Coordinating the health education, physical education, and aquatics programs for the school district.
- Meeting with principals and teachers to develop and implement curriculum in the areas of physical education, health, and aquatics.
- Ensuring that teachers and principals are familiar with changes to New York State curriculum in health and physical education.
- Providing leadership in curriculum development and planning, as well as the formation of goals and objectives in health education, physical education, and aquatics in concert with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Student Learning.
- Assisting in the acquisition of instructional materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Working with the Director of Instructional Support Services to recruit and hire quality coaches and staff.
- Working with the Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Student Learning to design and implement a staff development program.
- Working with the Director of Special Services to establish and implement programs appropriate to students with special needs.
- Working with building principals to ensure viability of the health and physical education curricula.

The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will supervise and evaluate staff members by:
- Visiting schools and observing classes to evaluate programs and assess the need for new programs.
- Reporting to the Superintendent the needs of the Athletics Department with respect to personnel.
- Obtaining the proper training and certification to conduct observations and evaluations in accordance with the District’s performance review plans.
- Observing staff, including teachers and classified employees, and providing feedback from the observations in accordance with the District’s performance review plans.
- Directing the activities of all members of the staff assigned to the Physical Education, Health, and Athletic Departments in the performance of their duties.
- Participating in the orientation of all new staff members.
- Aiding teachers in the interpretation of the courses of study and other instructional supplies and materials.
- Stimulating professional improvement by working with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Student Learning and the Professional Development Committee on a well-planned staff development program for staff.
- Aiding teachers with their daily programs, units, and lesson plans when needed.
- Motivating staff and encouraging professional development.
- Conferring as necessary with any member of the school staff concerning individual problems and, when appropriate, involve all responsible parties in the resolution of any issues or conflicts.

The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will coordinate the operation of all aspects of Pal-Mac athletics by:
- Managing the operation of athletic contests, ensuring that transportation, officials, facilities, medical support, and security are properly provided.
- Ensuring the proper eligibility of athletes.
- Ensuring coaches are properly certified and are up-to-date on mandated trainings.
- Preparing the school’s interscholastic athletic schedule in consultation with the principal, coaching staff, and educational professionals in the region.
- Ensuring all levels of athletic competition (practice and contests) are appropriately supervised, attending contests or assigning an appropriate school leader as warranted to ensure visibility, community engagement, and adherence to school policy.
- Ensuring that proper practice schedules are maintained and that all state and local rules are adhered to by all athletic teams.
- Supervising and evaluating the coaching staff.
- Conducting end of the year meetings for all coaches to complete the evaluation process and, if warranted, create goals for the next season.
- Developing a mentoring program for all coaches, especially those new to coaching.
- Conducting coaches meetings prior to every season.
- Meeting with parents and booster officers prior to each season.
- Promoting the growth and development of our student athletes.
- Modeling and promoting good sportsmanship.
- Assisting coaches with challenging situations and providing guidance or direct help when working with upset parents or community members.
- Leveraging resources to promote the success and growth of our athletic programs.
- Being well versed in league, District V, and state rules and regulations.
- Building effective relationships within and outside of the District.

The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will maintain effective relationships with the community and promote a sense of belonging by:
- Keeping parents, administrators and community members informed about health and physical education programs in the schools.
- Working cooperatively with district staff and community members to implement wellness policies.
- Working with community agencies as a school district representative.
- Keeping parents, administrators, staff, and community members informed of athletic contests and achievements by our teams and student athletes.
- Representing the school in District, Regional, and State meetings as required.

The Director of Physical Education, Athletics, and Community Services will create and maintain a fiscally responsible budget by:
- Developing the annual budget for health, physical education and aquatics and monitoring it throughout the year.
- Administering the school’s athletic budget, developed in consultation with the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent.
- For Sectional contests only, supervising the performance of the Section’s ticket sales ensuring that contests are properly serviced and that receipts are properly counted and banked.
- Ensuring proper insurance and warranty coverage is up-to-date and monitoring the maintenance of equipment.

The Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.
Evaluation:
At a minimum, the Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics will be evaluated by the Superintendent on an annual basis.
