GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Monitors help the District by assisting with routine, non-teaching duties including, but not limited to, pupil supervision in school, on school property, and at school-related functions.

Job Description

TITLE: Monitor
REPORTS TO: Building Administrator, District Administrator, or Department

Supervisor/Director

Purpose: The Monitor will have the primary responsibility of providing routine non-teaching duties, including student supervision in school, on school property, school vehicles, and at school-related functions. The Monitor will also have the primary responsibility of being the “face” of the building/department and ensuring all patrons receive a warm and friendly greeting. This Result Oriented Job Description is in conjunction with the job description provided by the Wayne County Civil Service.

Expected Results:
1. The Monitor will ensure the day-to-day functions of the building/department will be accomplished by:

  • Assisting teachers in supervising students during, but not limited to, recreation periods, lunch periods, study halls, on field trips, before and after school periods, and during transportation of students.
  • Guiding children safely across streets and intersections.
  • Maintaining order in areas such as, but not limited to, gymnasiums, locker rooms, swimming pools, and hallways.
  • Maintaining classroom routines.
  • Maintaining safety practices in and around school transportation vehicles and district buildings.
  • Overseeing students passing between classes, in locker rooms, and on the premises before and after school.
  • Issuing athletic supplies and equipment.
  • Assisting children in lower grades with wearing apparel.
  • Assisting children in lower grades in the cafeteria, e.g., opening milk and carrying trays.
  • Performing clerical duties under close supervision.
  • Rendering basic first aid treatment when needed.

2. The Monitor will ensure all parents, students, community members, employees, and all visitors to the Palmyra-Macedon CSD will experience the Pal-Mac Way by:

  • Greeting parents, students, community members, employees, and all visitors with a friendly and helpful attitude.
  • Displaying a customer service approach when working with others in person, on the phone, and through written and electronic communication.
  • Being attentive to the needs of all individuals who request their assistance.
  • Communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Utilizing their skills to de-escalate a situation when other people are in a heightened or excited state.

3. The Monitor will assume other duties, projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Building Administrator or Department Supervisor/Director.

The Monitor will possess the following minimum qualities, qualifications, skills, and/or abilities:

  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Fingerprint clearance through New York State Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability.
  • Evidence of an open, collaborative style that fosters a sense of teamwork and common purpose.
  • Proven people skills and is an effective communicator with a sense of humor. The successful candidate will be positive, approachable, and respectful of others.
  • Willingness to become an active, engaged and visible member of the Pal-Mac community.
  • A clear communicator in oral and written language, including electronic communication.
  • Displaying a customer service approach when working with others in person, on the phone, and through written and electronic communication.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members, administrators, students, and parents.
  • Use problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Listens first.

Evaluation:
The Monitor will report to the Building Administrator or Department Supervisor/Director and be evaluated by the District approved document.

Job Qualifications

The Palmyra-Macedon Central School District is looking for Monitors who will provide our students with a world-class, relevant education. 

Qualified candidates must have and be able to:

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Able to work well with others as a team
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  Good general intelligence; ability to establish good relationships with children and others; familiarity with classroom routine; good background or knowledge in specific field whore specialized duties are involved; above average clerical aptitude; resourcefulness in conducting above described activities indirectly related to teaching process; ability to maintain discipline; tact; courtesy; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:  Graduation from high school supplemented by additional experiences and knowledge in a particular field where specialized duties are involved; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
