DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine manual work involving responsibility for the efficient and economical performance of cleaning and maintenance operations for school buildings, grounds, and equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a head custodian, school principal or other superior in accordance with established policies, but considerable leeway is permitted for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision may be exercised over the work of subordinate cleaning or maintenance personnel.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Sweeps and mops floors and stairs;
  • Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment;
  • Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures;
  • Polishes furniture and metal furnishings;
  • Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish;
  • Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways;
  • Mows  lawns,   trims  shrubs,   rakes  leaves,   and   performs  a  variety  of other groundskeeping tasks;
  • Operates a coal or oil low pressure heating system including firing and removing ashes;
  • Delivers packages and messages;
  • Checks operation of clocks and bells;
  • Puts out and takes in traffic safety signs;
  • Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of school building;
  • Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels;
  • Paints  rooms and  equipment;   repairs furniture  and  makes  minor  plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs;
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports

Job Description

 

 

TITLE:                               Laborer - Tuesday-Saturday 2nd Shift Tuesday - Friday and 1st Shift Saturday

 

 

 

REPORTS TO:                     Building Administrator, District Administrator, or Department Supervisor/Director

 

 

Purpose:  The Laborer will have the primary responsibility of supporting the building or department supervisor in ensuring the buildings and grounds are of a quality that will allow our students to receive a world class, relevant education.  The Laborer will also have the primary responsibility of being the “face” of the building/department and ensuring all patrons receive a warm and friendly greeting.  This Result Oriented Job Description is in conjunction with the job description provided by the Wayne County Civil Service.

Expected Results:

 

1.      The Laborer will ensure the day to day functions of the building/department will be accomplished by: 

 

 

  • Cleaning classrooms, offices, hallways, and all other areas of the building/department.  Duties may include, but not limited to: washing walls and windows, vacuuming rugs, sweeping and waxing floors, cleaning bathrooms, cleaning pool/gymnasium area and locker rooms, cleaning cafeteria and kitchen area,  and performing a variety of building and cleaning work.

  • Performing general clean-up work.  Work may include, but not limited to: collecting garbage, rubbish and recyclables, removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass and weeds.

  • Removing snow from sidewalks, parking lots and recreational areas by shoveling or using a tractor or pick-up truck and plow.

  • Assisting in the maintenance and patching of roads, sidewalks, and parking lots by digging and backfilling trenches, spreading asphalt, sand and gravel.

  • Assisting in preparation, laying out, marking and maintenance of athletic fields or playgrounds.

  • Operating power driven tools and equipment such as, but not limited to: saws, compressors, drills, mixers, pumps, and various lawn mowing equipment and trimmers.

  • Using hand tools such as, but not limited to: shovels, scythes, forks, rakes. 

  • Performing ground maintenance and beautification work.  Work may include, but not limited to: trimming shrubs, cutting brush, planting and spading flower beds, planting trees and assisting in other grounds maintenance activities.

  • Loading and unloading vehicles and trucks.

  • Assisting in the installation and maintenance of signs and markings.

  • Assisting with painting and unskilled carpentry tasks;

  • Assisting in performing minor mechanical maintenance or equipment repairs.  Work may include, but not limited to: pumps, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and servicing equipment.

  • Assisting with the arranging of chairs, tables, and other equipment necessary for special use of the building (ex: Board of Education meetings, outside organizations, etc.).

 

 2.      The Laborer will ensure all parents, students, community members, employees, and all visitors to the Palmyra-Macedon CSD will experience the Pal-Mac Way by: 

 

 

  • Greeting parents, students, community members, employees, and all visitors with a friendly and helpful attitude.

  • Displaying a customer service approach when working with others in person, on the phone, and through written and electronic communication.

  • Being attentive to the needs of all individuals who request your assistance.

  • Communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing.

  • Utilizing their skills to de-escalate a situation when other people are in a heightened or excited state.

 

 

3.   The Laborer will assume other duties, projects and responsibilities as assigned by the  Building Administrator or Department Supervisor/Director.

 

 

The Laborer will possess the following minimum qualities, qualifications, skills, and/or abilities:

 

 

  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

  • Fingerprint clearance through New York State Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability.

Job Description Laborer

 

$16.59 per hour
